Andrew is the son of Karen and Hugh Mommsen, owners of Mommsen's Produce Patch who's strawberry patches were devastated by weather earlier this summer. Mommsen's assessment of the destruction was that an estimated one half of the 3- acre orchard, possibly close to one thousand trees, were destroyed. They are renowned for their caramel apples enjoyed at Mommsen's Pumpkin Patch which opens for the fall season in September. Mommsen employee, Sam Fankhauser thought the damage looked like a tornado had come through. It's amazing that one part is damaged and right next to it is untouched.
The storm definitely behaved very strangely, we're still trying to make sense of the reasons for some areas being flattened and others untouched. Lines of fruit- laden trees were mowed down by strong winds, for the most part breaking at the grafting point of each tree at the base, a natural weak point in young trees. Some trees were uprooted all together.
The fruit of the ruined trees is completely unsalvageable at this point. The earliest apple variety to be harvested in the orchard, Zestar, wasn't anticipated to be ready until late August. The orchard was about 6 weeks shy of harvesting, according to Mommsen. Several other trees on the property were also damaged, including a mature oak tree at the edge of the field. For Mommsen, the loss is personal.
