The storm definitely behaved very strangely, we're still trying to make sense of the reasons for some areas being flattened and others untouched. Lines of fruit- laden trees were mowed down by strong winds, for the most part breaking at the grafting point of each tree at the base, a natural weak point in young trees. Some trees were uprooted all together. The fruit of the ruined trees is completely unsalvageable at this point. The earliest apple variety to be harvested in the orchard, Zestar, wasn't anticipated to be ready until late August. The orchard was about 6 weeks shy of harvesting, according to Mommsen.
